RALPH B. GARRETSON III

MD, MS

Dr. Garretson is a board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who specializes in shoulder and elbow conditions.

Dr. Garretson joined Blue Ridge Orthopaedics & Spine Center in 2002. As a sports medicine doctor, he treats shoulder and elbow problems — many arthroscopically — including rotator cuff tears, arthritis, trauma, and instability. He presently holds privileges at Fauquier Hospital, Haymarket Medical Center, and Haymarket Surgical Center.

Dr. Garretson received his Bachelor of Arts degree in engineering, graduating magna cum laude from Dartmouth College in 1987. He then received a scholarship from Stanford University where he earned his Master of Science in civil engineering in 1988. Dr. Garretson earned his M.D. at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1996. He completed his surgical internship and orthopedic surgery residency at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.

 

Dr. Garretson, pursuing his special interest in shoulder and elbow surgery, completed a one-year fellowship program in complex problems of the shoulder and elbow at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
 

Dr. Garretson has published many research papers in the orthopedic literature and is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and a fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
